Hamlet: The Ghost Scene

After having watched the ghost scene from three versions of Hamlet, I've realized each version has a different way of portraying the scene. Weather its the music or the lighting or the how the actor played the role.

In the 1990's Hamlet, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, Zeffirelli did not portray the scene as scary, but more as calm and informative. Although when Hamlet, played by mel Gibson, finds out the news he shows a load of emotions from confusion to sadness. The music chosen adds to this confusion. For the music is not sad nor scary but a good mixture of the two. Although it could have made more use of special effects to enhance the scene and the importance it holds.

In the second film by Branagh makes the scene more eerie. He made it dark and foggy. He gave the ghost qualities that made him seem very strange. They gave him contracts that made his eyes brighter and lack color and have a sort of glow to them and the rest of his body. They not only made the setting look eerie they add music to make the scene more so. Hamlet showed more emotion then the last. He had a sense of fear and anger. The flash backs added a nice touch to the understanding of what was happening.

The third film, directed by Alermeyda, was to modernized in my opinion. It took away the emotion.]They also had not special effects to make the father seem like a ghost. In the first and second movie they either were pale or had music that made it more eerie or sad.

Although each production was well made and has its own way of showing what really happened. I believe the production done by Branagh showed what really happened best. The flashbacks provide a further explanation of what is happening.

  2. I agree, the second version was the best! The effects that Branagh put in the film were on point and the flashbacks were definitely a nice touch. The ghost seemed the most realistic out of all the films, especially compared to Alermeyda's film. The third film was way too modernized for me, therefore I couldn't really grasp the situation. It kind of bored me..
