Ophelia's Eulogy

Today we are here to say good bye to not only a great daughter but a great person in general. Her name is Ophelia. She made people happy with her wit and charm and with her selflessness. The love she had for other people was displayed through every act. She was thrown into a blender of emotions and did not know how to handle it. Shes wasn't ready and it lead to her tragic death and maybe you dont believe she deserves this but no one deserves it more.

For a girl who's lost so much I wish I could have been there to help get up and walk. Tell her she would have been okay, and that things may have been bad but she could have made it if someone was there for her. I always wonder why no one was? Why didn't anyone ever hug her? Even throw her state of madness she still showed her generosity and her caring for the people she loved.

I sometimes wonder if her state of madness was caused by Hamlet or was it caused by the loss of her father. When she saw Hamlet had lost his mind she was distressed  and the loss of her father bought her to the edge. I'd like to think that she killed herself to save herself from this madness. To bring peace to her soul. Maybe this way she can be happy at rest and than distraught while she was alive.

Poor Ophelia was the example of a wonderful person. She devoted her time to those who did not deserve it or didnt care enough about her. She shouldn't have died alone or without the help of those she loved. Althought mainly known for being Hamlets girlfirend, she was more than that.

I want to say one more time good bye to a sweet hearted girl, who didn't get the chance to live life to the fullest. I wish her much happiness in her new world.

Hamlet's Dilemma

Many may say that Hamlet's hesitation made him look weak and that he should have just killed Claudius , I believe for the time period of the play Hamlet made the right decision to wait.
At the time to which the play took place religion meant a lot more to people than it does now. If it were not for the religious factor I would say that Hamlet should have killed Claudius right then and there and gotten it over with. Back then people believe that even though you were a sinner you should have had the chance to repent your sins so that you can be seen as holy in the eyes of god. It was Claudius's repenting that had stopped the Hamlet from committing the revenge he wanted so badly. Hamlet also seemed to fear that if he killed him then while he was praying that then Claudius would go to heaven. Not only Hamlet seemed to want to kill him when he least expected it. Although that would have been a great moment with better planning Hamlet could find a more ideal situation.

I believe it took Hamlet a lot not to kill Claudius, and with that I think Hamlet portrayed great strength. You can tell by the way he killed Polonius that he wanted him dead, due to the fact he thought it was Polonius was Claudius.

During the scene to which Claudius repents his sins you come to learn the He does feel a sense of guilt for what he did. Although he felt guilt he was not willing to give up what he gained for murdering his brother.

Hamlet: To Be or Not To Be

Hamlet 1948
When watching this scene of Hamlets soliloquy for to be or not to be, I pictured Hamlet more deep in thought and annoyed. Although in the version by Lawrence Olivier, Hamlet seems to be more confused than annoyed. The scene starts out with Hamlet sitting at the top of the castle, with a good view of the ocean. The sky is gloomy which adds a nice effect for the confusion that hamlet feels. Although all of this is great I believe it does not show the importance this scene deserves. When Hamlet pulls out his dagger I feel it should have been noticed. For instance Olivier could have add music in the specific part to add effect. Not only in that part alone but much more throughout the film. The scene does not have enough emotion to it. The lighting of the scene was prefect so you can see every emotion thats flowing through him. I also like the representations of the waves down blow. I felt as thought that was a nice example of what Hamlet was feeling inside.
Hamlet 1990

The 1990 Zeffirelli version of the film, they portrayed the scene as much darker. It starts out as what I guess is the cemetery of the castle. Its dark and doesn't show much lighting. Which is the exact representation of what Hamlet feels. When he say " to die, to sleep" he looks at the corpses around him, to show what his fate might be. As he continues he g
ets angry and realizes the importance of life. Although they did not have the dagger in this version, I feel as though there should have been more music and light and something more to show that he was on the verge of committing suicide.

Hamlet 1996
When you first see the scene of 1996 Branagh version of Hamlet soliloquy, its very light and well decorated. He walks up to mirror as though he were taking to himself. When he walks up to the mirror I feel ad though hes stating in a matter of fact kind of what. He does not seem concerned about the that he may die. The actor seemed to play Hamlet as if he accepts death..I did like the music effect, and how it was used to build up the scene and made you believe something more was coming. Then when he pulls out the dagger and goes to stab his reflection, the music adds sense of fear. Although he had great effects I feel he didn't capture the emotion that hes feeling,

The last version of hamlet directed my Almereyda was the worst. It starts in a Blockbuster, and hes walking down the action movie line. Although the line are not spoken, you can see the grief in his face and the loss of hope. In the background they have The Raven playing. They did have good music which add to the sadness Hamlet felt. As good lighting so you can see the emotions on his face as hes
Hamlet 2000
saying this.

All three are merely interpretations of the directors ideas and what they saw when reading Hamlet.

Hamlet: The Ghost Scene

After having watched the ghost scene from three versions of Hamlet, I've realized each version has a different way of portraying the scene. Weather its the music or the lighting or the how the actor played the role.

In the 1990's Hamlet, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, Zeffirelli did not portray the scene as scary, but more as calm and informative. Although when Hamlet, played by mel Gibson, finds out the news he shows a load of emotions from confusion to sadness. The music chosen adds to this confusion. For the music is not sad nor scary but a good mixture of the two. Although it could have made more use of special effects to enhance the scene and the importance it holds.

In the second film by Branagh makes the scene more eerie. He made it dark and foggy. He gave the ghost qualities that made him seem very strange. They gave him contracts that made his eyes brighter and lack color and have a sort of glow to them and the rest of his body. They not only made the setting look eerie they add music to make the scene more so. Hamlet showed more emotion then the last. He had a sense of fear and anger. The flash backs added a nice touch to the understanding of what was happening.

The third film, directed by Alermeyda, was to modernized in my opinion. It took away the emotion.]They also had not special effects to make the father seem like a ghost. In the first and second movie they either were pale or had music that made it more eerie or sad.

Although each production was well made and has its own way of showing what really happened. I believe the production done by Branagh showed what really happened best. The flashbacks provide a further explanation of what is happening.
